Movie Review - 2012 *SPOILERS*

Dear Reader,

The movie '2012' is basically about the Apocalypse.

This two and a half hour movie's foundation is about the prediction of an ancient civilization, the Mayans, about the end of the world. These people had predicted the end of Time to come on 21st December, 2012 (21/12/2012), according to their calendar which would end on that day.

Supporting this theory are major religions such as Islam and Christianity who also predict that the Judgement Day is drawing ever closer. Nostradamus, who, according to Wikipedia, was a "reputed seer (meaning 'Prophet')" had made predictions which support the theory of 2012. He had written "Les Propheties" (The Prophecies), a three-part collection.

OK, enough background, now to get to the movie.

NOTE : This is a very summarized synopsis and review.

It starts out like any other movie. A guy, a divorced couple raising family, hard times with family, yadda yadda yadda, then things get kinda interesting as he meets the paranoid psycho of the movie, who really believed in the End of Days to happen very soon, and whom was right the whole time.

Due to tectonic plate shifts, many huge cracks are appearing all over the US. Then a place in Yellowstone Park explodes on a Gi-Normous scale, and then followed by collapsing of the Earth's crust in on itself in some places. Panic and anarchy spreads worldwide.

To escape all the chaos, the main character, Jackson Curtis (played by John Cusack) along with his family get in a private airplane attempting to fly to China, because the world governments have built these massive vessels, to save mankind from the floods (caused by tectonic plate shifts) which are mainly the cause of all the panic and havoc.

By this time, all surviving people are at the location in China, for the rest of the world pretty much has been destroyed...

And then comes the stunning climax, when everyone gets into the big ships, and fight against the merciless tsunamis!

And then finally,
mankind...

SURVIVES?!?!

WHAT
THE
FUNK?!

Yeah! You got that right!
We survived. The End of the World. How stupid is that?

Mankind was supposed to become extinct! The entire Earth was supposed to collapse on itself! It was supposed to blow up or something!

See, there are two sides to the theory of the world ending on 2012 : the skeptics and the fanatics.

Sure, the world begins to end, which upsets the skeptics, who deny the theory that the world will end because some ancient people predicted it. But then, the world, and frustratingly, mankind, survive the apparently temporary apocalypse which happened, which then upsets the fanatics of the theory. And nothing at all about Planet Nibiru either!
Because of this, the movie loses in three ways. Not only does it upset skeptics and fanatics, but it also upsets the common movie-goer (like me) who just wanted to see how the real end of the world would look like. There isn't supposed to be hope for mankind to survive. It's supposed to be the END of the WORLD!
It didn't satisfy anyone!

This movie therefore,
serves no purpose!

The only good side of this movie was the awesome special effects that depicted DoomsDay with such graphicness. The huge underground explosion, the enormous tsunamis, the Earth's crust collapsing on itself, the people screaming and falling to their death, the decimating flames, the buildings and cars and even an underground train succumbing to the madness.

It also had good acting and believable characters, with a slight jist of comedy.
But even those were ruined because of the movie's ever disappointing ending. =.="

Though I have been ranting about 2012's bad ending, this movie whollistically is quite good, and is still worth a watch.

Regardless, this wonder turned blunder movie will have you rendered speechless in the end. Either fearful of the near future, or frustrated of the closure.

Summing Up:
Good Acting.
Smooth Storyline.
Great Special Effects.
Bad Ending.
